These interconnected tales of a sensitive kid in Brooklyn provide the author an ideal forum to reflect on the crucial, formidable years of any child's life. The reader can smell the espresso, taste the cannolis, and see the creaky fire escape that functions as center stage.Cascio deftly defies typical convention, not delivering easy shocks or confrontations: much of the action (via the adults, including family and more shady characters) is hinted at, or happening --or about to happen-- outside the young protagonist's view, or comprehension. The reader knows a great deal more is going on, and this narrative restraint provides a depth and occasional menace not commonly seen in standard coming of age tales.There is a reportorial eye for detail but what really sells these stories is the heart on display: one feels a connection to an increasingly distant past (Brooklyn Dodgers!), and is able to care, because Cascio provides us with characters we care about.Looking forward to the next volume in this series!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.A great read: Growing up with a looming mysteryBy M. J. R.Right from the start, this is a deft and surprising look at trials of growing up in a colorful urban landscape - with an essential mystery at its heart. In short chapters, it's easily accessible, but there's lots going on beneath the surface of the first-person narration that keeps you turning the page to find out: What happens to Sally-Boy While the setting - post-War Brooklyn - is filled with truly memorable characters, the situations are always believable and relatable, thanks to the author's crafty prose. CainA gritty fire escape provides escapism to two boys growing up in postwar Brooklyn. Enveloped by a cocoon of love from their Italian family, the cousins survive the bullies and the nuns at their school (easily relatable to anyone growing up in the 1950's, Catholic or not), the passions of their striving parents, and the "funny business" of the afternoon customers at their uncle's bakery, whose dark suits and whispery dealings belie criminal connections. One boy is street-tough, the other, book smart, but their devotion to each other is profound. When they play with blocks or other toys on their seventh story perch, their perspective of life on the busy streets below both sharpens and widens. This type of lens into childhood would remind you of "Stand by Me," "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," and "To Kill a Mockingbird." It's a rare adult writer who can capture these relationships, but Cascio has done so with a memorable story that will leave you longing for more.
